The Intuitive Muse
a creative and uplifting weekend retreat with
Ivy Newport
September 23rd-25th, 2016 ~Bainbridge Island, WA
Allow yourself to take a break from your busy lives, connect with a great group of women and get inspired creatively. This small, intimate group will gather to share stories, create, and support each other as we tap into those little whispers inside ourselves that can so often get shoved in the far corners. As we delve into the process of collage and paint, we'll find our creative groove, explore new techniques, play with colors and release ourselves from any judgment of what's good or bad. This is about having fun and nurturing our creativity and learning to trust our creative instincts.
With Ivy and myself guiding you along the way, you are guaranteed to not only learn some great art techniques, but also to have a great time along the way.
This is a retreat for anyone, whether you are a skilled artist or have never picked up a paintbrush in your life.
You will be nurtured, supported and loved up on all weekend long. It is my deepest wish for each and every one who attends to feel this in their heart not only while you're at the retreat, but when you return home as well. Amazing things can happen when we open ourselves up to possibility and real connection. I truly hope you'll join us.
xo, Serena

* 2+ days of art workshops with Ivy
without any further ado, let me introduce you to Ivy Newport!
For almost a decade, I didn't pick up a brush. My fingers didn't touch paint. Art school had burned me out, but as time passed, I felt that something was missing. I just didn't know it was art yet!
I started blogging in 2006, shortly after having my first daughter. So, I kind of HAD to figure out photography. It was never my strength or even an interest of mine, yet I persevered. After many, many failed attempts, I finally honed my skills and fell deeply in love with taking pictures - which was pretty handy and contributed to the success of my online antique store and blog.
Soon, I was deep into the creative online community. I felt so welcomed. So at home. I started taking online art classes. Ahh! This is what I was missing. I couldn't stop making art. Painting, collage, sketching, creating digital illustrations. I felt alive again. Truly inspired.
I have explored many mediums and continue to experiment today. I do mostly feminine figurative and portrait work, however I have been commissioned to do abstract and landscape work.
My art doesn't have boundaries or constraints - I go where it leads me.
I dabble. I obsess. I explore. I play. I break the rules I learned in school!!
Sharing my creative process, I hope to encourage others to reconnect to their creativity and begin (or continue) down a path towards wholeness and fulfillment.
Together, I hope we can expand our definitions of self, be fearless in our creating and have faith that there is no wrong way to make ART!
The Intuitive Muse retreat
itinerary
We will gather Friday late afternoon at the beautiful Wacky Nut Farm for a meet and greet, wine and cheese social hour. Let's get to know each other a bit before we delve into our creative endeavors.
After dinner we will have a group discussion led by Ivy and do a short art journaling activity.
The discussion will include topics such as:
*what are means to you?
*discuss symbolism and colors that you gravitate towards
*think about what your Muse wants for you.... what is her purpose?
*think about what you are trying to convey in your artistic expression
*What are the underlying messages?
*what fears and doubts come up when you go to create?
*exploring our vulnerabilities and comfort zone
*learning to listen, be present with emotions, observing them but not attaching to them
*set intentions for the next day
We will then say our goodnights and meet up again in the morning.
Saturday
8:30-9:00 am meet up and get ready for class. Coffee and tea will be on!
9 AM class begins
Today's focus is being present in creation, non attachment, listening. Discovering personal mark making and intuitive symbolism ~ reflecting on what was discussed the night before.
Warm up exercises~ (1hr)
Charcoal, non dominant hand, water, ink, one color with a focus on intuitive mark making. Experiencing emotions and allowing them to pass through us. We will work to music. Color choice will be the one that resonates the most in the moment.
Finding messages within~ (2hrs)
*look for forms and shapes within
your mark making
*let your mind wander and
imagination take over
*look at the piece from different angles
*don't judge what comes up

*start to delineate these forms to bring forth imagery OR start to create
harmony in abstraction
*react to your instinct and don't overthink
*have not attachment
*add additional color as they call to you - keep color palette limited to three
colors
1:30-4:30 PM ~Intuitive Muse Portrait painting
* on a canvas begin the same way - making intuitive marks with charcoal, gesso, water. This removes the whiteness of a blank substrate and reconnects us to our Intuitive Muse.
* Demo* Ivy will teach a basic face lesson with charcoal and show different styles of expressionist portraiture through history.
* Using portrait examples, we will examine the photo and select one or two elements about the piece that resonates with you. It could be color, line, a shape, a texture, style or emotive quality.
* using these elements that inspire you, we will then create an intuitive portrait of your muse.
Sunday

9:00-9:30 Warm up exercise:
Letters to my Muse ~ on rice paper, we will write a letter to our Muse in ink with a dip pen. Tell her what you desire from her. How do you want her to show up? What does she mean to you? Your feelings about her energy. We will then tear this up and incorporate them into our art.
9:30-11:30 mixed media collage
* taking our very first exercise on paper with mark making, we will tear it up. Non-attachment! We'll add these to your pile of the torn up letters.
